Uproar over cargo wharf fines

Council has been fining suppliers who leave goods unattended at the cargo wharf under the charge of “dumping”. The result is that some major suppliers are now refusing to deliver to the Cargo Wharf. The WPCA, in conjunction with affected Western Foreshore businesses, met with Council in December in an effort to overturn the fines and amend the ruling.

The potential outcome of the meeting was an introduction of a 6 month trial along the lines of: no bollards, ability to leave materials unattended, restricted hours for heavy vehicle access on wharf eg: 7-8pm-6:30am, a contact person at Council for trades/users to notify of issues.

However, the latest notification from Council maintains that the bollards will remain in place and Council are looking at the installation of additional CCTV cameras at the wharf.

WPCA and SIRA will continue to liaise with Council in relation to the removal of the bollards and the installation of CCTV cameras.
