Community Bush Food Garden

Community Bush Food Garden

Within our Western Shores Spotted Gum Forest and other local plant communities we have a number of edible plants. Warrigal Greens dot our foreshores, Samphire grows in Morning Bay while the fruit of the Lilli Pilli, the Native Violet flowers and the purple berries of the Dianella are all edible. But there was an appetite to know more about other bush food with both the taste and nutritious qualities that could make it a stand out ingredient for modern cooking.

Finally, spurred on by donations from local residents, the Community Bush Food Garden was created in 2022 by Rocky Point and Elvina Bay Bushcare groups on Council Reserve on the southern edge of Elvina Bay Park.

This site was chosen to minimise impact on our native forest, be easily accessible to all ages, and provide a focal point of community interest particularly nearing harvest times.

Our objective is to be an open door for community involvement, to run two working bees a year, and to deepen our knowledge about bushfood. By planting, tending and eating the produce, we all stand to add enhance our diet as well as gain a better understanding of the past – one finger lime at a time.
