Roadkill – What you can do to minimise it

Apart from driving carefully and avoiding times around dawn and dusk, if there’s wildlife on the road and you look like hitting an animal, particularly a large one like a wallaby, your choices are limited and all of them are potentially dangerous, particularly on a winding, narrow stretch like McCarrs Creek Road. Mona Vale Road and Wakehurst Parkway are also danger zones.

OEH and Transport NSW are seeking information to establish the best places for mitigation. To assist with this, any motorists who encounter roadkill are asked to report it to www.wildlifemapping.org with the following information:

  1. The position via GPS or road and suburb (can be obtained via google or apple maps on your phone)
  2. The date
  3. The animal

Photos can also help in identification.

The website can be a little confusing at first. See attached image to navigate how to use.
Works best on Chrome or Firefox website browsers. Safari does not always display well.

Many photos automatically record location – so you can upload photo and information when you return home on your computer.
