With summer almost upon us it’s time to get fire plans and equipment ready.
You may have heard predictions that a La Niña season is on the cards, something that would mean wetter than average conditions for Eastern Australia. Already we have experienced recent heavy rains. That is no reason for complacence says West Pittwater RFS Captain Andrew Cutler. All that’s needed for conditions to be dangerous is three or four days of hot westerlies in a row. And the ground is still dry, Andrew says. “People need to have a plan.”
Knowing that equipment such as pumps and hoses are working properly is essential. West Pittwater RFS recently held sessions in Elvina Bay and Lovett Bay fire sheds to help residents test their water pumps. About 30 people took advantage of that community service. Thanks go to Equipment Officers Jon Matthews and Geoff Nimmo for organising.
And as in previous years, West Pittwater RFS will conduct a survey of local assets to ensure firefighters have everything possible at their disposal if needed.
