The Second Hand Ball

Organised as a fundraiser for the West Pittwater Community Association, the Second Hand Ball took place in Elvina Park on 21st January and was a sell-out success.

The rain that had hung around for days miraculously evaporated as the day of the ball dawned fine and clear and 120 people gathered at the park for some fun and games.

The name Second Hand Ball came from the idea of asking guests to purchase their attire from Op Shops which resulted in the raising of over $3,000 for various charities.

The Bay Boys

The evening’s entertainment got off to a melodious start with the dulcet tones of the Bay Boys welcoming guests. Greg Hurst did a sterling job as MC as did Kris Ferguson who looked after the audio.

Deciding best dressed was a difficult job for judges Pamela Purvis, Jon Matthews and Sue McKenzie but the final judging came down to Bianca Spears being crowned Priscilla Queen of the Ball, while Martin Didsbury got the gong for Most Original and Lizzie Brand for Most Eccentric.

After the brief but chaotic Trivia Quiz it was time for the main act – the fabulous Don’t Tell Mama band with lead singer Suzanne Plater looking slinky in sequins. The band had barely launched into their first number when the crowd was on its feet and began dancing the night away.

The SHB committee (consisting of Lisa Atkins, Kay Beashel, Pru Colville, Sandra Lazarides, Suzanne Plater and Michelle Wiener) was pleased to announce that almost $2,500 was raised (after expenses) – a large part of which would go to fund of the Welcome Pack designed to introduce newcomers to offshore living in the Bays.

The Committee wish to pass on their heartfelt thanks to all who contributed their time and talents. Also to the WPRFS for the use of the fireshed amenities.
