Friend, not foe: the Common Shining Cockroach

This little fella, the Common Shining Cockroach (CSC), is native to Australia and prevalent in the south-eastern states. And perhaps you’ve encountered more than usual lately because their numbers are increasing in and around our major cities. And from time to time, they wander into our homes.

The CSC isn’t a pest. It doesn’t spread disease, eat your food, or make a mess – except if you squash one.

In fact, this critter is helpful, in that it breaks up leaf litter and is a very effective pollinator. It also provides food for frogs and lizards. So, if you come across one in your home, please don’t kill it. Put it back outside so it can carry on its good work.

And couldn’t they have come up with a more attractive name for this clever creature? Something like the Glossy Shellback Cockroach (Glossaria shellusbackus cockaroacho) perhaps?
