Scotland Island Energy Reliability Project

Construction work - Church Point Reserve Carpark and Richard Road Scotland Island

As you are aware, Ausgrid is currently installing a new electricity cable between Church Point and Scotland Island. This cable will improve the reliability of the power supply to Scotland Island.

Dunstans Construction Group is doing this work on behalf of Ausgrid. The work involves using a directional drilling machine to bore a hole to Scotland Island and install conduits (plastic pipes) through the borehole. The cable will then be installed through it.

Progress to date

The drilling work is well under way with the pilot borehole to Scotland Island now complete. The borehole is currently being made bigger to be able to install the conduit and new cable.

Unfortunately, the project has been delayed by Covid-19 restrictions. I can now confirm that the main construction work should be completed by the end of October 2020, weather and ground conditions permitting.

Work on Richard Road, Scotland Island

From Wednesday 15 July 2020, work will start on the corner of Richard Road and Harold Avenue to build the exit pit for the HDD bore (see plan below for location of work). The construction work will take about a week to complete, weather and ground conditions permitting.

The area will be fenced and accessed regularly until cables are installed in October, weather and ground conditions permitting. The area will then be restored.

However, Ausgrid will need to return to access this area early in 2021 to complete jointing and connection work. We will notify you before we do this work.

Location of work on Richard Road, Scotland Island

Work hours

With statewide changes to construction working hours due to Covid-19, our work hours will continue to be

  • • Mondayto Friday 6am to 6.30pm – with drilling work between 7am and6pm
  • • Saturday 7.30am to 5.30pm – with drilling work between 8am and5pm
  • • Sunday 8amto 1pm– with no drillingwork

Please note outside the abovementioned drilling hours, you will notice the project team on site, preparing for the work and carrying out maintenance work on the equipment. We will continue to monitor noise levels and will shorten drilling hours, if required or if the statewide changes to construction working hours change.

What to expect during our work

Work will be noisy at times, and there will be an increase in vehicle movements. We will minimise the impacts to you by:

  • • installing noise blankets around excavations and noise generating equipment
  • • directing lighting away from residential properties, and
  • • carrying out regular inspections to ensure minimal impact to surrounding residents.

Parking and traffic at Church Point Carpark

The temporary parking restrictions in the Church Point Reserve Carpark will remain in place, while the work is being done, until the end of October 2020. We will contact residents who have kindly swapped their parking permits for Rowland Reserve, to discuss the extension of work.

Access at Richard Road, Scotland Island

During the work, we will work to maintain pedestrian access in most instances to Richard Road and to the wharf and reserve from the road. However, there will be times when access will be restricted during work hours. We will notify the community in advance of any access changes.

Access to the wharf from the water will be maintained at all times. Ferry, water taxi and boat activities will not be affected.
