Forest Ambassadors - Exhibition last days at Eramboo

Forest Ambassadors

Exhibition Opening: 2pm – 4pm, Saturday 15 June

Exhibition Dates: 10am – 4pm, Friday 14 June – Sunday 23 June

Gloria Florez presents Forest Ambassadors as part of her six-month artist residency at Eramboo Artist Environment, sponsored by Northern Beaches Council. Through sustainable printmaking methods and unique hand-made paper techniques, her exhibition evokes nature’s power and ephemeral beauty by exploring the unique habitat of the Pittwater spotted gum forest, an endangered ecological community likely to become extinct.

This exhibition also features an artistic and environmental collaboration between children from Cromer Public School After School Care, with collaborative artistic support from local writer and author, Zena Shapter and local multi-media artist, Alyson Bell.

About:

Gloria Florez is a Northern Beaches visual artist focusing on fibre art, printmaking, hand-made paper techniques and installation. Gloria's artistic practice has a continuing interest in the connection between science and art with particular reference to sustainability and natural phenomena. Nature has imbued Gloria's life, from a childhood in the cordilleras of Colombia to adulthood among the spotted gum forest of the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park Australia. Gloria sees her work being allied with First Nations, children, scientists, artists and writers from diverse communities to develop projects that connect us to the natural world. She has a BVA and a MFA (research) at the University of Sydney and a BVA Honours from the National Art School Sydney. She has participated in numerous group exhibitions nationally and internationally. Her exploration into organic materials took her to Puebla and Oaxaca Mexico, where she worked closely with elders from the Zapotec’s indigenous group learning their ancient process of paper making and their traditional natural dyed techniques.

Gloria won the prize for works on paper at the North Sydney Art prize 2017. She was invited to exhibit her work at the International Biennial Paper - Fibre - Art at the National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute 2018.

Recent exhibitions include Coal Loader Centre for Sustainability Waverton, Bega Valley Regional Gallery and Australia National University (ANU).
