An underweight turtle covered in barnacles has been rescued from Sydney’s northern beaches after concerned locals noticed it looked unwell. The turtle was found at Manly looking thin and weak with Manly Sea Life Sanctuary called in to rescue the sick animal.

“It’s not common to find a sea turtle like this in this area of the harbour as they are more suited to tropical climates,” the sanctuary’s head of operations Ashley Hayes said on Wednesday.

“It’s important we now rehydrate the turtle and kill the barnacles.” The reptile has been named Wicket by the sanctuary staff after the Australian cricket team.

“It’s a strong little guy, just like the Aussie cricket team,” Ms Hayes said. Staff are in the process of determining the age and breed of the turtle before it is rehabilitated at Manly Sea Life Sanctuary.
